The confrontation is heating up between Dakkan, Quinlan, and the three bandits! Seems Dakkan wasn’t quite as observant about his surroundings as he should have been. How will the situation progress? Well, we’ll just have to wait until next week to see!
A few readers mentioned last week they would be interested in a printed version of the prologue/first chapter, which is great! When Rachel and I get around to printing them up later in September/October, I’ll run a more official thing and get a final print count.

Quinlan isn’t looking very sure up there… I sincerely hope he actually has some combat and bloodshed practice, or things are going to get messy with Dakkan very quickly. And Dakkan, shame on you; Kenosh is going to tan your tail for being unobservant when he bails you and Quin out.

Actually, I would posit that the biggest mistake I see on anybeast’s part on this page is with the quasi-blindfolded bandit. In the previous page we see him covering Quin, whereas now he’s rushed to the aid of his masked Felis leader … which leaves Quin free to nock his arrow and cover the two remaining upright bandits while (presumably) Kenosh stirs and joins the fray. Am I right? Guess we’ll find out in the next week or two!

The gangsta ermehn was just standing there instead of doing anything useful. I’m starting to think that these bandits aren’t very competent or experienced (and have turned to life of crime due socioeconomic pressures etc.) I’d say that by the end of this chapter the masked felis turns into at least a reluctant ally, mark my words.
Oh, and ‘anybeast’…really? These are people, not beasts.
So are we talking about socioeconomic pressures again?
I personally think Kenosh is going to the run the lot off with the threat of his sword running them /through/ once he gets up, and then give Quinlan and Dakkan a dressing down, but that’s just me.
Yes, “anybeast.” Tis a Redwall reference and a term used to describe animal-people, which this cast happens to be.

I think Alex gave his two cents on this once: in-comic at least, you won’t find any sort of “beast” suffix when sentient characters are referring to other sentient characters… except in cases where an insult is intended. There are “animals” roaming around such as insects, birds, and fish, and those are “beasts.” Some Native American tribes simply called themselves their own word for “people,” and in their native tongues I don’t imagine it’s much different for the races of the Four Kingdoms.
Out of comic, though, it’s not like we’re going to police terms unless things get offensive or inappropriate. X)

Out of curiosity, are all sentient species mammals in this setting? Is there also “animals” that are mammals, or are they all insects and so on?
Are all sentient species mammals? In the known world of the Four Kingdoms, yes. As for “animal” mammals, there are not, to avoid weirdness. Invertebrates largely replace small mammals in vermin/scavenger roles, and there simply aren’t large beasts of burden.
I agree. The three robbers were a 1:1 match for the 3 protagonists and it was really 3:2 if they were able to neutralize the sleeping one quickly enough. They don’t seem to have thought ahead at all.
You can take the Redwaller out of Redwall, but you can’t take the Redwall out of … er, nevermind. Old habits die hard, I guess. ;-)

Man, the Ermehn’s gender doesn’t prevent Dak from giving her a swift kick to the chest. That’s no way to treat a lady, you rude otter! Even if she is brandishing a saber at you.
Rather than running him through for that, the bandit leader simply pins Dak’s arms behind his back and takes his staff from him – quite considerate of him. And then Quin has his bow aimed at them, but as has been pointed out, his face seems to shine more with fear and hesitation than determination. And apparently, Kenosh sleeps through all this commotion. Or does he…?
