Cain doesn’t look too thrilled about his predicament, probably because nobody ever fell down a dark and scary pit into the bowels of an abandoned city in the middle of the desert and found anything wholesome down there. He’s very likely hoping that this city they’ve delved into was abandoned because they had way too many soft mattresses and had to leave because there were just too dang many soft mattresses and the vulpin ran out of room for citizens.

I can assure you that is not the direction this specific story is taking.

Not much else to report on the Western Deep front–other than that we’re continuing to prep for San Diego Comic Con which is like, two and a half weeks.

Holy smokes, that’s not too far away, is it? Well, this is going to be my first trip EVER to SDCC, and also our first convention since I moved out to the west coast (it’s been almost three years)! Rachel and I are excited to share Western Deep with fans new and old alike, and to see what awesome new projects other artists are working on.

Speaking of awesome projects that other artists are working on, you might be aware of the incredibly sad news that the in-development Mouse Guard movie was cancelled by Disney. Wes Ball, the director of the film, offered an unprecedented look at its development through a series of (now removed) videos, in addition to several of the film’s concept artists sharing their work with the public. Instead of guest art this week, I’ll share a few pieces of this amazing work for a film that we unfortunately will likely not see come to fruition.

David Petersen, creator of Mouse Guard, is a good friend of mine and I was devastated to see such a promising adaption of his wonderful world be shut down. If you haven’t checked out his Mouse Guard series of books (Fall 1152, Winter 1152, The Black Axe, Legends of the Guard, and Baldwin the Brave & Other Tales), I highly recommend giving them a look. They are gorgeous, award-winning stories that fan of Western Deep would very likely enjoy.

Sadly not all the concept artists seem to be publicly credited, but Derek Zabrocki is one of the artists sharing work. You can check out his Twitter by following this link here.

You can also check out David’s wonderful Mouse Guard world by heading to this link here, or by checking out David’s Twitter account here.

See you all next week!
