From the whole Western Deep team: THANK YOU!

I believe history will confirm that I’m always in favor of a good FLUMP. There’s something awfully satisfying about Cain and Yurk barely escaping that nightmare ruin with their lives, staking stock of their safety, then immediately collapsing in a heap. It also gives us this amazing panel–maybe one of my favorites in this whole story thanks to its emotional punch:

Cain and Yurk just staring at the sun as it breaks over Nessa in the distance, completely stunned beyond belief that they survived their ordeal down below. You can almost hear the muted gusts of the open desert over the sounds of Cain and Yurk’s progressively steadier breathing until finally…

…we reach critical flumpage.

Take a breather, you two. You’ve earned it, I think.

Our Western Deep BackerKit Pre-Order Store is still open, so if you missed the Kickstarter campaign and still want to get in on either the Volume One or Two hardcovers, pins, prints, or stickers, that’s the best place to do that!

The BackerKit Store is RIGHT HERE.

In other Kickstarter news, a rockin’ 89% of all our backers have filled out their BackerKit surveys and locked in their orders. If you haven’t yet, please fill it out as soon as possible! Having all that stuff locked down helps us confirm order numbers so we can confidently place our orders for stuff like pins and stickers–anything we need to get in bulk.

For guest art this week, we celebrate the return of Shay’s artwork, which totally looks like somebody adapted Beyond the Western Deep as a serialized Netflix animated series (Netflix has yet to do that, unfortunately). But that doesn’t stop us from dreaming about it whenever we see, for example, this scene from Chapter 3 rendered as such:

Janik: “South is the bottom of the compass crown… Crown rhymes with Clown, which is a type of entertainer, The Entertainer is the name of a Scott Joplin song, Scott rhymes with Hot, as in Hot Mess, and Mess rhymes with Tess. TESS!”

Mitra: “…I didn’t understand any of that.”

ANYWAY

Thank you so much for this beautiful artwork, Shay! I absolutely love the streamlined designs for the characters–it definitely makes them more animation-friendly. It’s a very short walk in my head from this art to a 30 minute episode! Ah if only wishing made it so.

See you all next week!
